12.1 INTRODUCTION * Karl Terzagi is known as the father of soil mechanics. He defined soil mechanics as the application of the laws of mechanics and hydraulics to engineering problems dealing with sediments and other unconsolidated accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and chemical disintegration of rocks regardless of whether or not they contain any admixture of organic constituents. Now the term soil mechanics is generally means the discipline of engineering which deals with the properties and behaviour of soil as a structural material. * Residual soil means the soil resulting from disintegration of rock and staying at the place of their formation. * Transported soil is the soil that is carried away from its place of formation by natural forces.
